RADIOACTIVE

Welcome to the ALPA ONE Group. We are a selected group of ALPA (Malta) members who have one common objective, that is to increase the union's strength and negotiation capabilities through advanced marketing and communication methods.

As the chairman of the group, I have set myself a goal to revamp ALPA's image before the turn of the century so that the union will be on a strong foothold in the new millennium. This is being done by opening up the communication channels with members and upgrading the union's information systems. There is already a very noticeable build up in enthusiasm among the members towards this initiative and I can assure all, that it doubles once they join the ALPA ONE Group.

Take a look at what we are currently doing. I would be most delighted if you were to join us and work together as one team, so give it a thought then contact us. We promise you an immediate reply.

ALPA ONE Group

The ALPA ONE Group is giving top priority to communication between the union and its members. We believe that members must be kept updated on union matters constantly by the most accessible means. Therefore we are dedicating a lot of time and work to the noticeboard, the newspaper and the website and other projects in the pipeline. To give a hint we will have a chat, a newsgroup and ... a radio !

Website

ALPA ONE Group has advised the EC of the importance for ALPA to go online by the end of the decade. It is a major project. Great thought has been given on what should be the contents and how should they be accessible due to the sensitivity of information. The website will be attractive to members because it will have : Up-to-date News, Member contacts, Committee contacts, Real-time Weather, all ALPA Publications, Directives in force, Archive etc.

The site is almost ready, however before it is published, it will go through rigorous testing. The webmaster is still open to suggestions for anything members wish to see included. If you have any suggestion kindly send it to alpaone now.

Flight Press

We are providing information for every pilot, whether he owns a computer or not. The Flight Press is the quarterly newspaper which although it is called 'quarterly', actually it is published even more frequent depending on the demand and information to be conveyed. It is a serious paper because there is readership by members, company management and even ministerial officials.

The paper has gone though thorough brainstorming sessions on the format and also on the type of editing to be employed. It is based on free speech and it contains company news, union news, a president's letter, secretary notes, articles by members themselves, letters to the editor and a humour page.

There is potential for 12 pages and from the next issue onwards members will have more home  made articles, more news and depending on the members themselves, more feedback and letters.

The Flight Press Team is the following :

John (Editor,  ALPA PRO). Reviews the paper and authorises publication.

Kevin (Media and Campaign Manager). Selects and scans news and articles putting them in line with the message that the ALPA wants to pass. Manages the paper and its feedback.

Eric (Deputy Editor, ALPA Secretary). Works with the editor and writes news, Secretary's  Notebook and article writer.

Alex (Research and Typesetter). Sources information. In charge of the layout and typesetting.

Alan (Assistant Research and Typesetter, Printer). Works with Alex. In charge of print quality, printing and distribution.

Joe (Assistant Printer, Graphics). Works with Alan and is the paper's cartoonist.

Regular contributors are : Mario (Health), Patrick (Crossword)

The Flight Press team meets regularly but never physically. We regularly hold online conferences and co-ordination is managed completely online and for this we save a lot of time and money. We hold one pre-publication meeting so as to proof read and authorise the paper for publication. This is done at the ALPA ONE Group Chairman's residence after which we always celebrate the publication of the issue.

Noticeboard

The union noticeboard is an important tool to convey information. It is the at-a-glance news update before or after going to work. For this reason the noticeboard must be placed at a strategic position so that it is read by all going or finishing work. It is kept regularly updated and thought is also given to the style and placement of notices.

The noticeboard is kept easy to read with a dark green background so that the important papers stand out. Union directives are usually placed in the middle on an official letterhead. The alert notice 'Directives in Force' is placed on top, in  the middle of the noticeboard whenever there is a directive in force. Each directive then have their own labels.

The ALPAInfo is a weekly information update with news bits on ALPA events. It usually highlights the work of the executive committee.

On the noticeboard there are all the contact numbers of the EC members for ease of reference.

Campaigns

Through the ALPA ONE Group the union has advanced methods of campaigning. Campaigning on an issue involves a lot of co-ordination and filtering. The union actively uses the following resources for campaigning :
  • Active presentations with background messages
  • Adverts, pamphlets on Noticeboard, Flight Press, Website and Flyers
  • News and Articles in Flight Press and in ALPAInfo
  • Conversations and personal contact
  • Activities

During a campaign these resources work tightly together and very co-ordinated so as to achieve the maximum effect. Campaigns are important because in some cases only though them a message is passed effectively.

Event Direction

In the future ALPA ONE Group will design and set up every ALPA Event so that the product would be of a professional standard. We believe that the preparation, setup, environment and experience is as important as the content or message of the event.

There are several events which ALPA will organise in the future.

  • Annual General Meetings

  • Extraordinary General Meetings

  • Seasonal Parties

  • Airshow Presence

  • Fund Raising Activities

After a meeting with the EC on the event, the ALPA ONE Group will take over :

Event Organisation : Research, Negotiation, Publicity, and Logistics

Event Setup : Positioning, Lighting, Environment, Backdrops, Attention Focusing Points

Event Direction : Entrance Programming, Direction, Sound, Lighting, Temperature, AFEs and ADEs

We plan to make every event an experience !
